Feeling unappreciated and taken for granted can cut a deep wound in your self-esteem. As the pain gets deeper, your sense of worth and identity will follow. Your lack of appreciation can make you question who you are and what you’ve done in your life. When all you receive are negative criticisms and unappreciation, you can easily fall into depression. We feel unappreciated because deep inside, we have expectations that haven’t been met.
Being a good listener means understanding the risks and situations that people are facing every day of their lives. Fortunately, our society has evolved into becoming a community that’s more accepting of intellectual discourses on mental health, emotional support, etc. Decades ago, these are issues that have been buried under a long pile of taboos because they’re considered unimportant. These issues were brought to light because someone was compassionate enough to listen.
Being kind to yourself and to other people is the best gift you can give. It doesn’t need to be bought nor bribed; all it takes is reaching out the goodness in your heart and sharing it to others. As you rove through your twenties, remember the people who have helped you during your lowest times. Take part in the cycle of generosity and pass it on to more people around you.
You don’t have to wait to be rich to change a life of a human being. You simply need to find ways to help alleviate their lives by giving what you have. When you’re playing every role there is, don’t ever forget to play the role as a Samaritan to those in need, especially the last, least, and the lost. Those who are truly kind are those who remain kind even when it’s not reciprocated. Trust me when I say, that throughout your life, you would need someone who’s kind, nothing more, nothing less.
